STORY DESCRIPTION: On May 25, 2020, on the South side of Minneapolis, Minn., police arrested George Floyd for passing a counterfeit $20 bill. During the arrest, officer Derek Chauvin knelt on Floyd’s neck for almost 8 minutes. Floyd lost consciousness and died in custody later that evening. Bystanders filmed the encounter, and the crowd yelled that Floyd was in destress, not breathing and eventually that he had passed out, or possibly died. As the video made the rounds over the next day on social media, crowds gathered at the intersection where he died, and immediately created a makeshift memorial that grew over the next few days and weeks.
Protests over police brutality, and justice for George Floyd, kicked off all over the world as the Black Lives Matter came into the forefront of the news cycle again. In Minneapolis, protests continued for days and culminated in close to 150 burned buildings, including the Minneapolis Third Police Precinct.
