Bus Scenes: Evening – SleepingEvening Waiting for buses at the UT West Mall Station southbound bus stop.
SUMMARY
The “Bus Scenes” images are a visual exploration of commuter culture on Austin's Capital Metro public transit system. This involved observing the ebb and flow of the bus, using an iPhone, as people moved about — a swath of humanity presenting itself in a fresh and unobstructed manner. The individual riders from varying levels of the socio-economic hierarchy coalesced in the bounded spaces of the bus stop and the bus.
The bus formed an introduction to the Capital city and its residents within the communal bus space. In most cases, interpersonal connections dissolve as everyone makes their way ensconced in their own world and not interfering in the shared space, rolling along a systematic route while remaining isolated within their inner space, with headphones and screens acting as shields or distractions. Modeled on the documentary and street photography work of Walker Evans, Robert Frank, Vivian Maier, and Helen Levitt, this essay is influenced by photojournalistic affordances translating encounters visually though moments deriving personal meaning within a common cultural space structurally defined affected.
These photographs, part of a larger body, exist in a pre-Covidian space without enforced social distancing and masks which would have significantly altered any potential images after March 13, 2020, the day my commuting ended. The interrupted essay abruptly concludes and is a glimpse into a commuting culture that may never be the same.
The author made all the photographs with an iPhone while commuting on the Capital Metro bus system. The author also made visual toning adjustments in Photoshop and edited the images for entry which are non-sequential.
